One of the most common things parents tell us at our Romford, Shenfield, and Chelmsford branches is: "My child is very shy—I'm worried they won't want to join in."
It’s a common myth that drama is only for the "loud" or "theatrical" kids. In reality, some of our most successful students started as the quietest ones in the room. At Dreams Theatre School, we specialize in helping shy and anxious children find their voice through the power of play.
The Safe Space of 'Role Play'
For a shy child, being themselves in front of a group is terrifying. But being a "Pirate," a "Space Explorer," or a "Friendly Giant"? That’s different. Role play acts as a shield. By stepping into a character, children in Hornchurch, Upminster, and Brentwood feel safe to experiment with their voices and movements without feeling "judged."
The 'Buddy System' at Dreams
We never "put a child on the spot" on their first day. Whether they are joining our Dreams Dainties (Ages 3-5) in Shenfield or our main school in Chelmsford, we pair nervous newcomers with a friendly "Buddy." This ensures they always have someone to follow during games and someone to sit with during breaks.
Small Wins, Big Confidence
Confidence isn't built overnight. It’s built through "small wins."
- Week 1: Saying their name in the circle.
- Week 3: Volunteering an idea for a story.
- Week 6: Performing a short line in front of the group.
By the time our annual showcases arrive at professional Essex theatres, those "shy" children are often the ones leading the troupe!
