If you've been looking at drama classes in Romford, Shenfield, or Chelmsford, you’ve likely seen the acronym "LAMDA." But what actually is it, and why does it matter for your child?
LAMDA (the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) is essentially the "piano grades" of the acting world. Just as a child might take Grade 1 or 2 in an instrument, they can take graded exams in Acting, Speaking of Verse and Prose, or Public Speaking.
Why Parents in Essex Choose LAMDA
At Dreams Theatre School, we integrate LAMDA preparation because it offers a "tangible" result. For parents in Brentwood, Upminster, and Hornchurch, it provides a clear path of progression.
- Measurable Progress: Children love receiving their certificates and medals.
- Communication Skills: It teaches children how to speak clearly, project their voice, and articulate their thoughts.
- UCAS Points: For our older students at the Shenfield branch, higher-level LAMDA grades (6, 7, and 8) actually count towards University UCAS points!
Is it just for 'Star' Performers?
Actually, LAMDA is often best for the shy or quiet child. Because the exams are often taken individually or in small pairs, there is no "audience" pressure. It’s just the child and a friendly examiner. It’s a wonderful way to build confidence in public speaking without the stress of a full theatre showcase.
Where can my child take LAMDA?
We offer specialized LAMDA coaching at our Shenfield location on Wednesdays from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, but the foundational skills are taught across all our branches in Romford and Chelmsford.
