LAMDA Series Part 2: What is Speaking Verse and Prose?

While Acting is about becoming a character, Verse and Prose is about the art of storytelling. At our Shenfield branch, we use this syllabus to help students master the spoken word, improving their memory and their ability to engage an audience through poetry and literature.

The Art of Oral Interpretation

In a Verse and Prose exam, students prepare a selection of poetry and a passage of prose to perform from memory.

• Vocal Technique: We focus on pitch, pace, and pause to bring the text to life.
• Rhythm and Meaning: Students learn to navigate the specific structure of a poem versus the narrative flow of a story.
• Audience Connection: Unlike acting, where you stay "in the scene," Verse and Prose encourages the student to communicate directly with the examiner.

Our specialized coaching at the Hutton Community Centre attracts students from Ingrave and Ingatestone who want to excel in school.
